I have the AVC-R it seems to do the job quite well. I use a fraction of its features, the two settings, the sensor monitors, and to be honest dont know how to use the majority of the rest of them, nor do I care. In that respect the cell phone analogy holds even more true. I think these debates over which are better, are much like the debates over cell phones. If all you care about is if the unit properly does what it NEEDS to do, set and hold boost levels, then the rest is just meh.
